My brother-in-law found out his Qatar ID had expired at a hospital reception desk. He was there just to collect test results. The receptionist ran his QID through the system, looked up apologetically, and told him they could not process anything with an expired card. He had no idea it had lapsed. Three years in Qatar and he had never once looked it up.

The Qatar ID, or QID, is not just a card you carry around. It is your access to banking, healthcare, government services, driving, and your legal proof of residency. When it expires, those doors start closing one by one. Checking its status takes about sixty seconds.

What Is the Qatar ID Number?

Your Qatar ID is an 11-digit number printed on your residency card. It links your identity to every government system in the country. If you have lost the physical card, you can still find the number through your employer HR records or by visiting any MOI service centre with your passport.

What you need before you check:

  • Your 11-digit QID number printed on the front of your Qatar ID card (OR)
  • Your passport number and nationality if you do not have the card handy
  • A browser, or the Metrash app if you are already a Qatar resident
  • Note: Metrash2 was discontinued on 1 March 2026. Download the new Metrash app.

Method 1: MOI Portal at moi.gov.qa

Go to moi.gov.qa, click Inquiries, then Other Inquiries, then Official Documents. Enter your 11-digit QID number, complete the CAPTCHA, and hit Search. The result tells you whether your ID is valid, expired, or flagged, along with the exact expiry date.

Method 2: Passport Number Lookup

Do not have the QID card in front of you? Use the same Official Documents section on the MOI portal but enter your passport number instead. Select your nationality, complete the CAPTCHA, and submit. Works well for people who have recently arrived and have not yet received the physical card.

Method 3: The Metrash App

Open the Metrash app, log in with your Qatar mobile number or QID, tap Profile, go to Wallet, and tap your Qatar ID card. Status, expiry date, and residency details all load on one screen. The app also sends push notifications before your ID is due to expire, which alone makes it worth having.

What the Status Messages Mean

Valid

Your ID is active. All services are accessible.

Nothing required. Note the expiry date.

Expired

The card has lapsed. Services are restricted.

Start renewal immediately through your employer.

Under Process

A renewal or new application is being processed.

Track via MOI portal using your passport number.

Invalid

A data mismatch or sponsor issue exists.

Visit an MOI service centre with your passport.

What Happens When Your QID Expires

Banks can freeze accounts. Employers hit compliance issues. Hospitals decline non-emergency services. A fine of QAR 10 per day applies after a 90-day grace period, capped at QAR 10,000 for long lapses. On top of the money, an expired QID signals a problem with your residency that your employer needs to fix urgently.

How QID Renewal Works

For workers, the employer initiates renewal through their company MOI portal. Your part typically involves a fresh medical exam, updated employment contract if the previous one lapsed, and biometric updates in some cases. A new physical card follows once processing completes. Track the renewal on moi.gov.qa using your passport number or the renewal reference your employer gives you. If they are slow to act, put the request in writing to their HR.

Can I check my QID status without the physical card?

Yes. Use your passport number instead of the QID number on the MOI portal. Go to Inquiries, Other Inquiries, Official Documents, and enter your passport number with nationality.

How long before expiry should I start renewal?

At least four weeks. Renewals involve medical exams and employer paperwork that take time. Starting at the last minute risks an overstay situation.

My status shows Invalid. What does that mean?

It means a data problem or sponsor issue on your record. Do not panic. Visit an MOI service centre with your passport and the system prints will show the specific reason. Most Invalid statuses are fixable.
